What a difference a week can make! As Oakland Veg Week wraps up, we want to say thanks so much for your support of our inaugural event. We’re so happy to report that with your help more than 650 people took our pledge to eat more vegetarian meals for the week. We hosted an event every night including three cooking demonstrations, a talk on vegan nutrition, a film screening, a social event with great veggie burgers and a rock band, a talk on animal rights, and a grand finale celebration. More than 350 people attended our events of which you can see photos here.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, Councilmember Nancy Nadel, Congressperson Barbara Lee, and Alameda County Supervisors Chan and Carson all pledged to be vegetarian for the week along with several members of Caltrans’ executive staff. The County and City both passed proclamations declaring April 15-21 as Veg Week. The Oakland Unified School District also challenged students and staff to go veg for Oakland Veg Week.

Oakland Veg Week was well publicized by local publications including Oakland North, Oakland Local, East Bay Express, and Natural Awakenings.

We’ve received wonderful feedback from pledgees like, “It went better than I thought. I have decided to do Meatless Mondays. I’ll do it again!” and “I got more restful sleep. I plan to continue the new diet.”

We’re so grateful for your support!

Thanks for helping us make the world a better place.
